Peter McCarthy

About us

1830 – over one hundred and eighty years ago, Peter McCarthy came in from Co. Limerick and established a furnishing business in what was then George’s Street in Limerick City.

Over the years expansion took place and various other properties were acquired until at the end of the century a very extensive business was carried on by his son, Stephen McCarthy, taking in such interests as complete house furnishing, music and musical instruments, cinema and undertaking.

McCarthy’s also manufactured their own lines of furniture and many of these are still to be found today in different parts of the country having stood the test of time.
In the sixties when the premises of McBirney’s in Thomas Street came on the market, Joseph A. McCarthy, grandson of Stephen, acquired this 14,000 sq. ft. premises. At that time Thomas Street was not a leading commercial street, but, again, looking to the future, McCarthy’s were confident of this location. Today, Thomas Street ranks as one of the best business streets in the city with a fine range of modern shops.

This then is just a brief history of a local business which is proud to serve the people of Limerick, maintaining a high standard of quality products at affordable prices. The fact that this policy has brought McCarthy’s through over 180 years of trading is ample proof of the success of this approach.

The corner stone of their success is undoubtedly due to the fact that they have always been a family run businness then and now and have nurtured their customers generation after generation.
In December 2006 McCarthy’s moved from Thomas Street to their present location in the busy Eastway Park opposite the NCT test centre where there is ample free parking and larger showrooms.
